Q&A with Luis R. Hoyos, M.D.
Why did you become a doctor/reproductive endocrinologist?
I always liked science and among the different ways I could devote a career to science, I found in medicine a field of knowledge which could be applied to help people on an every day basis. The calling to become a Reproductive Endocrinology & Infertility specialist did not come until later in medical school, when, during an assisted reproductive technology lecture, I became awestruck by the beautiful and marvelous interaction between ultimate science and patient care at the service of family building. I knew my calling at that time, and I feel very proud of my specialty and what we do for our patients.
What about IVF FLORIDA makes you the proudest
Every single member of our team and the way we care for our patients. Patient care is a team sport, and we have the best in the game.
Describe a time you were inspired by a patient.
It would be very difficult to refer back to a single patient when all of them inspire me every day. I am most inspired by their resilience and drive. They wake up every day committed to the process, and it is my duty to give them my unwavering attention and support as they go through. They keep me going, and wanting to help them is my “ikigai” (i.e., sense of purpose in life).
What is your approach to helping patients who are struggling?
Supporting them is my full-time job. Unfortunately, struggles may happen, and I make sure to make myself available to assist, guide, lift up or become their confidant in any way that I can. This is a process that is intrinsically human, very rooted in the fabric of our own nature. Therefore, I make sure to remain human and provide that human touch we all need during the difficult times of our lives.
What do you enjoy doing in your spare time?
When I’m not in the office, most of my time is spent relaxing with family and friends. When time allows, I love to travel. I find a lot of joy in visiting new places, experiencing the local food scene and taking history tours to learn as much as I can about the part of the world I am in.
