Semen Analysis & Andrology

Male fertility is a key part of the conception process, and a semen analysis is one of the first diagnostic steps in understanding reproductive health. At IVF Florida, we believe in evaluating both partners to create the clearest path forward. A semen analysis is a quick, noninvasive way to understand male fertility — and it often provides important answers.

What is a semen analysis?

A semen analysis is a laboratory test that measures the health and viability of sperm. It’s used to assess key factors that influence fertility, including:

  • Sperm count – the number of sperm present in the semen
  • Motility – how well sperm move
  • Morphology – the shape and structure of sperm
  • Volume and pH – characteristics of the semen itself

These measurements provide a comprehensive picture of male reproductive potential and help guide your care team in selecting the right treatment approach.

When is a semen analysis recommended?

A semen analysis is typically part of the initial fertility workup for individuals or couples trying to conceive. It may also be recommended if:

  • Conception has not occurred after several months of trying
  • There is a known history of urological or hormonal issues
  • You’ve had prior surgery, infection, or trauma affecting the reproductive tract
  • You’re planning to use sperm for IUI, IVF, or fertility preservation

In many cases, this simple test can provide clarity early in the process.

What to expect during testing

Semen samples are most often collected after a brief period of abstinence (usually 2–5 days). Patients can produce the sample at one of our IVF Florida offices with an appointment or produce the sample at home and either use a mail-in semen testing kit, or with an appointment scheduled, drop off a home sample off at one of our clinic locations.

To ensure the most accurate results:

  • Follow abstinence guidelines provided by your care team
  • Use only sterile containers provided by the clinic or our mail-in testing kit
  • Deliver the sample within the recommended time frame if collected off-site or follow all mail-in instructions

Once received, your sample is evaluated by our andrology team — specialists trained in the assessment of male reproductive health.

What your results may reveal

A semen analysis can detect a range of findings, from normal sperm health to specific conditions such as:

  • Low sperm count (oligospermia)
  • Poor motility (asthenozoospermia)
  • Abnormal morphology (teratozoospermia)
  • No sperm present (azoospermia)

If results are outside the expected range, your fertility specialist will review the findings with you and may recommend additional testing or a consultation with a urologist who specializes in male fertility.

The IVF team from Coral Gables, Pembroke Pines and Margate are truly a special group of ladies. From all the nurses, team and staff members they made the process extremely comforting.
