What is National Infertility Awareness Week?

National Infertility Awareness Week is recognized during the last week of April and is a national movement founded in 1989 by RESOLVE: The National Infertility Association.

During this week, millions of Americans come together to raise awareness and enhance the public’s understanding of infertility needs and the barriers that individuals and couples face when building their families.

“1 in 8 couples has trouble getting pregnant or sustaining a pregnancy, and many more people face barriers to building a family. They are all someone you know. We can all be part of the conversation. We can all raise our voices. We can all change the narrative and truly support people with infertility,” said Barbara Collura, RESOLVE’s President/CEO. “Let’s use NIAW to raise our voices, talk about the issues facing this community, and make sure we continue to support those most in need.”

During the week of April 24 to 30, we encourage you to wear the color orange, which promotes a sense of general wellness and emotional energy. According to the NIAW website, Orange can help a person recover from disappointments, a wounded heart, or a blow to one’s pride.

In addition to donning orange during this symbolic week, here are a few other ways you can raise awareness about infertility and help inspire others:

1) Share your story on your feed or in a Reel about your struggle with infertility. Is it facing barriers with accessing treatment, living without children, adoption, surrogacy, or 3rd party family building?

2) Instead of the anecdotes of telling people who face challenges in building a family, “You should just” use the hashtag #WeCanAll and share some ways we can all change the status quo.

3) Send a supportive message to friends and family members struggling to build a family. A whisper of encouragement goes a long way for someone who needs a lift.

4) Show your support by changing your social media profile picture to an orange heart.

5) Host a virtual event or fundraiser to help raise awareness and break down barriers.

5 Ideas for a Fertility Friendly Valentine’s Day

If you are up to your ears in fertility meds, ovulation kits, and managing appointments, you may be wondering how you can make this Valentine's Day special. To keep the romance alive, here are five tips to help reduce infertility-induced stress and strengthen your relationship.

Put the Fertility Talk on Hold
If you are struggling with infertility, it can feel like your life revolves around appointments, injections, and waiting. This Valentine’s Day the team at IVF FLORIDA suggests putting the fertility talk on hold. Instead, take the time to catch up with your partner and reconnect on a deeper level.

Share the Love
Practicing gratitude can help couples cope with the stress that comes with struggling with infertility. One of the best ways to show your gratitude? Giving back. Take some time on Valentine's Day to share the love with those in need by volunteering at a nursing home, animal shelter, or other local non-profit.

Try Something New
Try something new this month with your partner to strengthen your connection and reinvigorate your bond. Whether it's rock climbing, an art class, or trying a trendy restaurant, Valentine's day is an excellent excuse to try something new and exciting.

Go on Holiday
Grab your overnight bag and hit the road. Choose a town an hour or two away and spend a day exploring. Enjoy exploring street fairs and trying new restaurants while talking about anything but fertility! Use this time to discover a new place to broaden your horizons and give you and your partner something new to talk about.

Take a Break
Dealing with infertility can be draining, but taking a break and relaxing together could be just what the doctor ordered. Whether it’s enjoying a couples massage or lounging on the couch, doing something you both find relaxing can help you reconnect and appreciate just being able to be together.

For more information on infertility treatments for you and your partner, contact IVF FLORIDA at 954-247-6200 to request an appointment.
